:- 5.0 out of 5 stars from John Birchler -- An examination of issues concerning parenthood, family, and abortion : Christa Parravani's "Loved and Wanted: A Memoir of Choice, Children, and Womanhood" is must reading for anyone who is either for or against abortion. Parravani chronicles the many decisions she has had to make pertaining to life, love, and motherhood. The writing is crisp, detailed, and at times excruciatingly engaging. She pulls no punches, and the degree of empathy that she extracts from this reader, at least, is astonishing. Every time I think she can't reveal anything more heart-rending, she does just that. A few years ago, I read her first book, "Her," a discussion of her relationship with her twin sister Cara, and I couldn't imagine that she could outdo that book. I was wrong. Each of these two volumes left me feeling as if I'd been through an emotional wringer. I can't wait for her next book. ( Reviewed in the United States on November 12, 2020 )

It's a beautifully written story that takes you through the challenges faced by a mother of two who finds herself unexpectedly expectant with a third child while living in West Virginia. I loved the way it wove the macro issues of injustice with the personal. Although the focus is on access to abortion services, I was even more drawn to the narrative of what it means to be a mother today. I didn't love just because I love memoirs, I loved this because it really spoke to what it is like to be mother, wife, woman in this country right now. This is the story of a woman who gets pregnant in the deep Red state of West Virginia and realizes that her choices are not what she thought they would be in the year 2020. This is is also the story of woman doing everything she can to keep her family afloat, sometimes on her own while her husband works on the other side of the country and sometimes with him in the same house.
