• 4.0 out of 5 stars from michael moodgroove -- A Fun, Lightweight Fan's Type Book : If you love horror movies, own a few horror movie soundtracks of your own and enjoy horror movie posters and illustration, this is a dynamite book. It's reasonably hefty, with marvelous printing, EVERY page in FULL COLOR. As reference material, it barely passes as being informative. The most successful engagements in this arena are a few brief interviews with some of the films composers. You won't get any annotation on players on the records, comprehensive release history and versions of the soundtracks; in fact the book works best as simply a collection of horror movie album cover art with a fan based summation of the soundtracks themselves. However, this all might be an actual advantage - it seems like a book ready made for the internet age, for people with short attention spans who then might simply go use the internet for more information on any particular soundtrack after this book has peaked their interest. If your expectations are in place you can't beat the overall pleasure of looking through this book. ( Reviewed in the United States on September 12, 2019 )
• 4.0 out of 5 stars from Raymond Reed -- Great value with woeful omissions : As a huge fan of horror genre soundtracks I am very happy to finally see a book dedicated to the subject, including short interviews with John Carpenter and Fabio Frizzi and large reproductions of LP art. I would have preferred smaller images and more text. Also, more varied images such as composers and studio spaces would have been nice. I was slightly annoyed the authors omitted classic soundtracks to “Angst” (Klaus Schulze), “Bird with the Crystal Plumage” (Ennio Morricone), “Beyond the Black Rainbow” (Senoia Caves), and “Valerie and her Week of Wonders” (Luboš Fišer) while including many lesser regarded and mainstream scores. Musicians will be disappointed in the utter lack of technical details on instrumentation/production but I suppose they are not the authors’ intended audience. These are minor complaints. Overall, the book is well worth the price, nicely produced, and a welcome addition to my library. ( Reviewed in the United States on June 7, 2019 )

• 3.0 out of 5 stars from Leopold Stotch -- ...enjoyable and frustrating in equal measure... : As a horror-movie-obsessed record geek, I figured this book would be right up my alley, and was very excited to nab a copy. It's definitely a beautiful and lovingly assembled object, with full-color printing throughout and a large format layout that makes the reproductions of the featured record sleeves all the more sumptuous. While informative it must be stated that this book is limited to a specific collection of horror soundtrack albums and is not an encyclopedic reference. Also recording session details, musicians, studios , etc are not included. Artwork beautifully reproduced but also limited to individuals collections and not comprehensive. All variations of the covers should be represented and while the title is Blood on Black wax (vinyl records) todays collector is looking for colour variations, none of which are illustrated in the book not even record centre labels. As no other book of this type exists all collectors of this genre will want the book but by no means a complete anthology, some history would have been interesting. • 3.0 out of 5 stars from Tofa -- A bit of a disappointment to be honest : The good - it's chunky and vibrant. The cover looks great and the pages are glossy. The bad - it's called Blood on Black Wax, the isn't one picture in the book of the actual records, the inner sleeve or notes. Some of the pages have a photo of what I assume is the soundtrack cover but not all. It's not a bad book, just not what I though it was meant to be. If you're looking for what I'd expected just watch unboxing videos of Mondo and Death Waltz records on YouTube. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on December 30, 2019 )
